Pictet targets Global Megatrends with new fund

17 February 2009

Pictet Funds (PF), the fund distribution company of the Pictet group, is launching the PF(LUX)-Global Megatrend Selection fund. The fund is managed by Pictet's institutional asset management division, Pictet Asset Management.

The fund will invest on an equally-weighted basis across the following global sectors: Water, Timber, Clean Energy, Security, Biotech, Digital Communication, Generics and Premium Brands. Pictet has identified these as persistent, secular changes in structural factors (such as demographics, lifestyle, regulation, and the environment) which have the potential for long-term growth, irrespective of short-term or speculative fluctuation.

Portfolio manager Hans Peter Portner comments “Pictet is a recognized leader in thematic investing, and combining all the megatrends that we have identified into one fund is a very simple and very attractive concept that should provide an opportunity to outperform global equity markets. Because we rebalance the portfolio across the eight megatrends each month, there is the automatic replacement of overpriced themes by those which are undervalued.”

“This rebalancing also means that we will add new investment ideas to the portfolio, whilst outdated ones are removed, thus ensuring that new topical themes are regularly included,” adds Portner. “It also means that the fund will incorporate a high and increasing level of diversification across markets.”

Currently in its marketing period, the fund will invest in the underlying portfolios of Pictet’s existing eight thematic funds and will not be structured as a fund of funds, therefore avoiding the impact of dual pricing on performance. Instead, the fund will be structured as having a single manager fee (1), and will allow investors to access Pictet’s family of innovative sector funds, each managed by a specialist team with over 10 years experience in their respective sectors.

Renaud de Planta, Partner in charge of theme funds, adds, “By launching the Global Megatrends Selection fund, we are giving investors access to our innovative theme funds with a sustainable edge. With the advent of globalization, world-wide industry factors increasingly overshadow geography. By choosing sectors with excess return dynamics, sustainable trends outperform short-lived speculative fevers.”

(1) The annual management fee is 1.6%.
